WHY IS CONTEXT RELEVANT FOR THIS PIECE? Meditations on First Philosophy was first published in 1641. The text was written by Rene Descartes, a philosopher and mathematician from France, while he was living in the Netherlands. During this period, Europe was undergoing what would later be called the Scientific Revolution. The purpose of the text is related to the relevance of the context in that the purpose of the text was metaphysical in nature which was in response to the growing understanding during that period of the natural world and its connection to the abstract.
